how it all started
WonderCare was born not in a boardroom—but through a moment of serendipity among collectors.
It began at the Aman Hotel in New York City, in the spa’s sauna lounge, where Insurtech entrepreneur Benji Markoff struck up a conversation with Paul Palandjian, CEO of O’Leary Ventures after noticing that Paul was wearing a Rolex Pepsi GMT and a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712—one on each wrist—not as a statement, but for a practical reason familiar to any serious collector: he didn’t want to leave high-value watches unsecured in a locker. Benji was likewise sporting a hard to replace gem, his Rolex Sprite. For collectors, those details matter—and they sparked an immediate connection.

The conversation quickly moved beyond horology. Benji had recently sold Founder Shield, a modern insurance platform that reimagined a traditionally analog, friction-filled industry through technology, transparency, and superior user experience. It was clear he understood how to take a commoditized business and redesign it from the ground up.

Soon after, Kevin joined the conversation—double-wristing as always. As fellow collectors, the discussion was immediate and candid. Kevin spoke openly about his frustrations: multiple thefts of high-value watches, opaque coverage, slow claims, and insurance products that treated exceptional timepieces as afterthoughts—often buried inside homeowners policies never designed for assets of this caliber.
That frustration was shared by everyone in the room.
All of them were passionate watch collectors. All of them had experienced firsthand how poorly traditional insurance handled watches—lumping portable, globally worn assets into static homeowners coverage. It was an approach they believed was fundamentally misaligned with how collectors actually live, travel, and collect.
The opportunity was obvious.
Kevin brought his career-long superpower: identifying exceptional entrepreneurs and backing them to build scalable businesses by eliminating friction and inefficiency. Benji brought deep insurtech expertise and took the lead in architecting a modern, technology-enabled insurance platform purpose-built for collectors. He soon recruited his longtime insurtech partner, Carl Niedbala, as the fourth co-founder, adding operational depth and underwriting experience.
Together, the group then recruited James Walter as their CEO, drawing on his background of building companies and scaling technology at Xbox and Microsoft. The foundation was set.

Within months, WonderCare launched: a seamless, technology-driven insurance platform designed specifically for luxury watches and fine jewelry. The response was immediate. Collectors recognized what had been missing—coverage built with intent, clarity, and respect for true replacement value.
